Hennepin Ave & 1st Ave N (One-way to Two-way)

Project Type:

This project will convert both Hennepin Ave and 1st Ave N from one-way operation to two-way operation. The project scope includes rebuilding the signal systems, seal coating the roadways and re-striping. Curb lines are not anticipated to change with this project with the exception of the intersection of 1st Ave N and 12th St N where the I394 exit is being modified to allow cars to continue north-bound on 1st Ave N and the block along 1st Ave N between 8th St N and 9th St N where the existing center median will be removed to accommodate the conversion.

Project Limits:

This project is located in downtown Minneapolis on Hennepin Ave and 1st Ave N between 1st St N and 12th St N.

Construction Start Date:

June 2009

Length of Construction:

Construction will take the entire 2009 construction season with the actual conversion from one-way to two-way operation to occur in late October/early November. Seal coating is set to occur August 7th-8th.

Traffic Impact:

Most of the signal construction can be accomplished from behind the curb lines therefore traffic impacts will be minimal. Hawthorne Ave between 12th St and 10th St will be converted to two-way operation in the next couple of weeks, ahead of the rest of the project, in order to better disperse traffic exiting from 394.

Seal coating is scheduled for August 7th-8th. Temporary pavement markings (metallic tabs) will be used until all signal work is complete and the permanent striping is placed.

Project Updates:

Sealcoating Update

The project team will be scheduling a couple more public meetings later in September/October to provide information regarding the two-way operation.
