Stray Animals
Minneapolis Animal Care & Control works to reduce the number of stray animals in our city. As per state law, all stray animals must be held by MACC for five days for owners to reclaim them.
If you see what you think is a lost or stray animal, determine if you think the animal is friendly. If you can safety approach the animal, look for a collar and identification tags. Many animals are returned home simply by residents calling the contact information on the pet's tags.
Does the animal have a pet license tag? If so, please call 311 and we can get in touch with the pet's owner and reunite the pet with the worried human. Some residents prefer to drop off the pet at the city's animal shelter. Our staff check for tags and microchips on all animals that enter the shelter, and work to reunite pets with their owners.

What if the pet's owner isn't found?
Healthy stray animals that are not reclaimed are made available for adoption either at the shelter or through one of our rescue groups.
