About the Minneapolis City Attorney's Office

Mission Statement

Our mission is two fold: to enhance public safety and quality of life for Minneapolis residents by holding criminal offenders accountable and enforcing civil ordinances and to deliver high quality, cost effective legal services and to vigorously represent the City’s interests in litigation matters.

Who is the City Attorney?

Susan L. Segal is the City Attorney for Minneapolis, the largest city in Minnesota. The City Attorney’s Office has a staff of over 100 employees, including sixty attorneys. Ms. Segal was appointed City Attorney in February 2008.

Ms. Segal came to the City from the Hennepin County Attorney’s Office where she served as the Deputy to Amy Klobuchar during Senator Klobuchar’s second term as County Attorney. Before entering public service, Ms. Segal was a partner at a major Minnesota law firm. She has served as an adjunct faculty member of the University of Minnesota Law School and William Mitchell College of Law. She is a 1979 honors graduate from the University of Michigan Law School and has been a resident of the City of Minneapolis for over twenty-five years.

What does the City Attorney’s Office Do?

The City Attorney’s Office includes a staff of 107 and is organized into two divisions: Civil and Criminal. The Civil Division provides a broad range of legal services to the City’s elected officials and staff, the City’s departments and independent boards and commissions. The Criminal Division prosecutes misdemeanor, gross misdemeanor and petty misdemeanor crimes within the City.
