The department has outsourced information technology services and transformed into a business solutions provider. It is nationally prominent for technology initiatives that meet the business needs of the City. BIS drives effective management of City government by leading change, improving business outcomes, implementing information technology solutions that meet business needs, and providing cost-effective, efficient and reliable information services. BIS recently developed an innovative business model for municipal wireless service that will provide residents, businesses and visitors with wireless broadband access anywhere in the city. The network will allow the City to deliver services more efficiently and effectively. BIS is a partner in bringing new technology to public safety. ShotSpotter is one way Minneapolis is using new technology to make neighborhoods safer. In addition to providing 911 dispatchers and police with better tools to respond to shots, it is expected the technology will deter would-be criminals from committing gun violence. Using cameras that cover 30 blocks, the Downtown SafeZone increases downtown safety. Through Safe Zone, the Police Department has expanded its uniformed presence and improved response times. As a result, the most serious crimes downtown have declined 21%. BIS administers the Safe Zone technology. Using professional project management, BIS has improved Computer Aided Dispatch for Emergency Communications, implemented state-of-the art software for Minneapolis 311, and introduced enterprise Geographical Information Systems. The department is a leader in the City’s Enterprise Information Management and e-Government initiatives. It is also managing the implementation of a new financial system.
