Elevators and Related Devices

Elevator Permits

To ensure all elevators, escalators, and related devices (dumbwaiter, chair lifts, etc.) are safely installed and maintained, a licensed elevator contractor must obtain an elevator permit to perform the following work:

To apply for a permit, a licensed contractor will complete the elevator permit application form and pay the permit fees according to the elevator fee schedule.

As a contractor you must provide proof of licensure at the time you apply for a permit.

For New Installations and Modernizations

To prepare for the final inspection, contractors must complete the ready to inspect checklist and return it to the City of Minneapolis via fax or mail before scheduling the final inspection. If the installation is not complete at the time of the scheduled inspection, the contractor may be subject to a penalty as provided in MN State Code Sections 326B.081 to 326B.085 in addition to the rescheduling delay.

Annual Billing

All elevators and related devices must have a current license. Elevator licenses expire on the last day of February and are billed annually.

Periodic Inspections Program

The State of MN requires periodic inspections of elevators and related devices. The City of Minneapolis will work with the property owner/manager to arrange for these inspections. You can use Property Information to look up permit and inspections history on the property. Please make sure that the keys, registration cards, and identification/floor plans are up-to-date and available for the inspector.

Please see the Annual Inspections Handout for Owners/Contractors for additional information on what is needed and what to expect during a periodic inspection.

To request inspections outside of regular hours, complete the Elevator After Hours Inspection Request form.

After an inspection, City staff may provide a list of orders to correct for your licensed contractor to complete. The licensed contractor may need to apply for permits to complete this work.
