4th Street North & South Reconstruction
The City of Minneapolis will be reconstructing 0.6 miles of 4th St between 2nd Ave N and 4th Ave S. The design for the 4th St Reconstruction Project is complete and road reconstruction is anticipated to begin in Spring of 2021.
The project will include reconstruction from building front to building front with full removal of the existing street, curb and gutter, driveways, and sidewalk. The design for the reconstructed 4th Street includes new roadway pavement, better pedestrian crossings, and a new protected bike facility. View the final 4th St S roadway layout.
The goals of the project are to:
- Improve the condition of the infrastructure for pedestrians, bicycles, transit, and automobiles
- Improve pedestrian safety, mobility and accessibility through improved crosswalks, and an expanded pedestrian realm
- Improve and enhance the one-way bike lane on 4th Street
- Provide for transit service
- Add more trees and plantings

Utility Repairs Underway
Metropolitan Council Environmental Services (MCES) is currently underway with construction of two new access shafts on 4th Street, just east of Hennepin and Marquette Avenues, to repair the underground tunnels. Repair work will include stabilizing the walls of the tunnel, removing debris from the top of the pipe, rehabilitating the pipe, then filling the space with grout. This work is anticipated to be complete by Spring 2020.
Check out the MCES 4th St Tunnel project for more information on the tunnel repair work:

Project Date Postponed
In order to best coordinate with several other active downtown street projects, the 4th Street Reconstruction Project has been postponed one year and is now anticipated to begin in Spring 2021 instead of Spring 2020. Additional utility work is currently scheduled to begin in Summer 2020.
