Personnel Services
Personnel Services has three main responsibilities: recruitment and staffing, test
development and tutoring, and job classification.
Recruitment and staffing functions are carried out to keep more than 8,000 positions
filled under the jurisdiction of the City Council,
Board of Education, Park and Recreation Board and the
Library Board, by providing the operating
departments with qualified candidates and helping them meet their affirmative action
goals. Many new employees are subject to pre-employment drug testing and medical
examinations.
The test development and tutoring unit of Personnel Services develops job-related tests
and provides tutoring to help test takers do their best. The unit aims to select the best
qualified employees and to improve employment opportunities for women and minorities.
The department also maintains a fair and objective system for classifying jobs based on
their job-related contribution and/or assessed value to the goals of the City.

are currently open for application. The Personnel office is open to the
public from Monday through Friday 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Applications can
be filled out in the office. If a job is not currently open for application,
an interest postcard can be filled out for that job and the Personnel
Department will send notification when the job opens.
