Emergency Communications CenterThe Emergency Communications Center (ECC) is staffed 24 hours a day every day of the year. The ECC receives calls from citizens via both 9-1-1 and conventional telephone numbers. Calls are screened to determine the need for police, fire, and/or ambulance assistance and if a response is necessary, department staff takes steps to dispatch the proper City police or fire personnel. The department uses a call prioritization and classification system to insure that those needing help most urgently get the fastest possible response. This is necessary because during periods of peak activity, there are often more calls awaiting service than there are available police squad cars to send. An advanced computer system is used to help employees inventory the calls that are received and organize them for dispatch and later retrieval. All telephone and radio conversations involving ECC operations are tape recorded and strict attention to accuracy, speed and quality are maintained. More than 90 civilian employees staff the ECC. Tours of the ECC are available by arrangement. More information about the Minneapolis Emergency Communication Center.
