Public HousingThe Minneapolis Public Housing Authority (MPHA) manages and maintains approximately 6,700 housing units in Minneapolis, including scattered sites (individual homes) and more than 5,000 apartments in 42 highrises. More than 10,000 residents live in public housing, many of them elderly or handicapped, most of them on limited incomes. The MPHA strives to increase available, affordable housing for low- and middle-income families, upgrade and preserve existing housing, and promote neighborhood revitalization by encouraging resident involvement and social activities. The MPHA also administers the federal Section 8 rent-subsidy program, which qualifies tenants who meet certain guidelines to live in either privately-owned, market-rate rental housing or housing built or rehabbed through Section 8. Participants pay 30 percent of their income for rent and utilities. The MPHA is directed by a Board of Commissioners consisting of nine members, of which two are public housing residents. The MPHA is administered by an executive director. The mission of the Minneapolis Public Housing Authority is to provide well-managed, high-quality housing for eligible families and individuals; to increase the supply of affordable rental housing in the metropolitan area; and to assist public housing residents in realizing their personal goals for economic independence and self-sufficiency. Approximately 97% of the MPHA's funding is provided through federal subsidies and rents. The remaining 3% is provided by the City of Minneapolis.
