When should you file a complaint of discrimination?
The Complaint Investigation Division has the authority to investigate complaints of discrimination that have occurred within 365 days of the alleged incident. Therefore, contact the Division immediately about your concerns.
Why should you file a complaint of discrimination?
Discrimination is a community concern; a person does not have to be directly affected by discrimination to file a complaint
No cost; filing a complaint and investigating a case are free services provided by the City of Minneapolis by trained and licensed attorneys.
Neutral investigation; the Complaint Investigation Division conducts a neutral, impartial, and thorough investigation into all cases.
Before You File
Please note that the Complaint Investigations Division has the authority to investigate complaints of discrimination that only:
- occur within the Minneapolis city limits; and
- occur within 365 days of the alleged incident.
The Division does not have jurisdiction to investigate complaints against any county, state, or federal government entity.
How to File a Complaint of Discrimination
You may file a complaint of discrimination either online, by phone, or in-person:
- Online Option – fill out the Online Complaint Form
Phone Option – call the Intake Officer at (612) 673-2091 to set up an appointment
- In-Person Option – visit our offices to collect a complaint form:

Once you have completed an intake form, you will be asked to schedule an intake appointment with our Intake Officer who will discuss the alleged discriminatory act(s) and the investigatory process with you.
