Children’s Hospital and Clinics of Minnesota

Location: 2525 Chicago Avenue South

Status: Under construction, to be completed in 2011

Objective: The Children’s Hospital expansion – located on Chicago Avenue in the heart of the Minneapolis Lifesciences Corridor – addresses several of CPED’s community development goals: promoting private sector growth to build a healthy regional economy, and supporting the development of vibrant, sustainable neighborhoods in South Minneapolis.

Description: Children’s Hospital is recognized as one of the nation’s best pediatric hospitals. This major expansion includes a nine-floor bed tower; a new emergency room, ambulatory care center and parking ramp; and a new hospital lobby. A skyway will link the campus across Chicago Avenue. Plans include a neonatal intensive care unit with private rooms, improved surgical suites, private inpatient rooms and a new Ronald McDonald House® location.

The Minneapolis Lifesciences Corridor is the nation’s largest entirely urban medical corridor, with 19 health and medical institutions, 61 research labs and clinics, more than 2,300 physicians, 12,000 employees and 250 researchers.

Partners: The City worked closely with Children’s Hospital to review site and building designs and to develop a Workforce Employment Plan that ensures the hiring of women and minorities and promotes the construction industry to students in the Minneapolis Public Schools. CPED and the Heritage Preservation Commission also reviewed the character and significance of buildings in the expansion area.

The design and construction team includes Ellerbe Becket and Knutson Construction. The project is supported by internal funds, a capital campaign, and a $103 million tax-exempt revenue bond issued by the City of Minneapolis and the Saint Paul Housing and Redevelopment Authority.
