Background

Shoreham Yards, owned by Canadian Pacific Railway, is a 230-acre train, trucking and bulk-distribution site extending from Central to University avenues NE and 27th Avenue NE up to St. Anthony Parkway in Northeast Minneapolis.

It is also a designated Industrial Business Park Opportunity Area as well as a Potential Growth Center for employment growth in the City’s Comprehensive Plan.  These designations mean that the City will support redevelopment of this area for new light industrial businesses that provide high job density, good wages and low impact on the surrounding community.

The site is one of several target areas in the City of Minneapolis’ Brownfields Program.

The property is home to the city-designated historic Shoreham Roundhouse (1887).

Cleanup Efforts

The Railroad and several former lessees of the property have initiated a Voluntary Investigation and Cleanup Program covering approximately 20-plus acres in the southeast corner of the yards along Central Avenue. As part of their activities they have prepared, for approval by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency, an area-wide Response Action Plan (RAP) for the East Side Shoreham Facility. This plan identifies the cleanup levels and techniques that are proposed. The links will take you to the text and figures in the proposed area-wide RAP. Early in 2006 there will be a public meeting to seek input on the area-wide RAP. For additional information, please contact Jim Forsyth.
