Recognizing the severity of the youth violence problem, the Mayor and City Council of Minneapolis passed a resolution in November of 2006 acknowledging youth violence as a public health problem and recommending the establishment of a Youth Violence Prevention Steering Committee to oversee further efforts to develop and implement a plan.

An Amendment was made in July of 2008 that the Mayor and the City Council establish a Youth Violence Prevention Plan Executive Committee and a Youth Violence Prevention Citizen Advisory Committee

State

Legislation was passed and signed by Governor Pawlenty in 2009, addressing youth violence as a public health problem; coordinating and aligning prevention and intervention programs addressing risk factors of youth violence; requiring the commissioner of health to apply for private, state, or federal funding; proposing coding for new law in Minnesota Statutes, chapter 145.
