Historic Profile: The role played by the Roosevelt Library as a community and cultural resource in the years Minneapolis struggled to accommodate waves of new immigrants and urban growth marks it as a historically significant landmark. Roosevelt was one of thirteen libraries developed under Gratia Countryman, noted as the first woman librarian in the U.S. responsible for the development of a system the size of Minneapolis during her tenure from 1904 to 1936. The Roosevelt Branch was located in an area with a booming population. Between 1920 and 1930, the Roosevelt neighborhood experienced over a fifty percent increase in population, a majority of them Swedish immigrants. The library helped the new residents adjust and accommodate to their new setting.
