We all know how good it feels to be treated with dignity and respect, so these comments from grateful participants ring loud and clear.  The best thing was...

Volunteers and participants are asking more about the repair tools we use, well here is the list.  Special thanks to Takoda Institute instructors, PCs for People, and U of MN for compiling and expanding this list over the year, and to the volunteers for keeping the versions up to date on our USB drives for the events.

Here's what volunteers liked the most:

Word has it that people LOVE the Minneapolis Fix-It Tech events and here's why they come in:

Word Image shows various reasons people attend, different repair issues

At the September event, we served 36 customers who brought in 41 devices, and wrapped up with about 65% of devices fixed.

Extending the reach -- Partners and IT students connect with participants for follow up education appointments. U of M, TAKODA, and Bill Shy have led the way with this concept and here is what Elana from Heritage Park Community Center had to say:

"The event was so helpful. We got three of the four laptops working and I was able to set up additional times with one of the volunteers who needs to do community service hours for his school! That is exactly what I needed." ~Elana Dahlberg, Community Liaison Specialist, Urban Strategies

Victor and John from the IT Department are among 44 IT professionals, students and community volunteers helping with education and repairs, while Roger Hagedorn and Pat Nelson consult with participants and conduct Cyber Security workshops .

2438 27th Avenue S Minneapolis, 55406

Wow, that was our 7th Fix-It Tech event since November! And, if there's one thing that holds true through all of them - it's that our volunteers are incredible. It's so fun to see different people, groups, programs, etc. work, learn, and serve together. And what we're doing - it all adds up. Fix-It Tech has now served hundreds of residents throughout the greater Minneapolis community, but especially those living in North & South. Want to keep it going? We do!

At the August event, we served 43 customers who brought in 56 devices of all varieties, and wrapped up with about 70% of devices fixed.

Some feedback from Participants...

"Jeff and Eric were very helpful even though I arrived 15 mins before event was over. However their persistence to try and fix the Dell computer impressed me. Great assistance."

"I was ready to purchase another computer and found out by the amazing person that helped me that I just needed to do upgrades and updates and patience."

"I'm just always impressed by how nice and eager to help everyone is." -Fix-It Tech Participant

Special thanks to these three folks—Mike Kingbird, Justin Zack, and Scott Strehlow—for going above and beyond on Friday, staying well past the event end time, to fix a stubborn device. It means a lot, giving up precious Friday hours in the sun, to help out in such a way!

Feedback from Waite House Event

I really like how my consultant explained the minor details simply. The applause at the end made me feel great. I mean I just did not expect it. I looked around and everyone there felt like apart of my community. Community is made of those individuals that push me forward, encourage me to take the next step. I wish they could have seen how I felt inside. Keep up the good work!  ~ Participant

Volunteer feedback

Fix-It events are the kind of non-traditional community outreach programs that I feel can have the largest impact. Thank you for making them happen and I look forward to the future events.  ~ Volunteer Tech Lead

Little Earth of United Tribes - The Program Pilot

Monday, July 28, 2014, 2:00 - 6:00 p.m.
2495 18th Ave. S. Minneapolis 55404

Working with our 2014 Urban Scholar, Erica Velez, along with Richard Balderrama at Takoda Institute's IT Program and Frank Downwind at Little of Earth of United Tribes, we tested the concept in the summer of 2014. Fix-It Tech is based on Hennepin County's successful Fix-It Clinics for household items. Nancy Lo kindly shared her framework which we adapted for this new technology-focused event. Volunteer partners included PCs for People, Unisys, and Free Geek.
