Alcohol Service Policy Considerations
Developing a policy for alcohol service ensures that employees will not serve or sell alcohol to underage or obviously intoxicated customers. The following items will help you create an effective policy which protects both your employees and your business.
1. What is your policy on prohibiting sales or service of alcohol to individuals under the age of 21 years old? How will you communicate and reinforce this?
2. When will employees receive a copy of the policy? Are they required to sign that they received the policy and read it?
3. Are employees required to attend Alcohol Server Training upon hire? Annually thereafter?
4. What other types of ongoing training will you provide? Policy and procedures manual; employee agreement; memos; staff meetings; demonstrated competency; on-the-job acknowledgements, audits, and refreshers by management?
5. How will you communicate valid forms of ID including drivers’ licenses, state ID, military ID, and passports? If the ID is expired, it is not valid.
6. How will you demonstrate adequate methods of checking ID?
a. Compare picture on ID with the customer
b. Check birthday
c. Examine the card for signs of falsification or tampering
d. Use of an electronic ID card reading device/scanner
e. Check the US Driver License Booklet if unsure.
7. Where is the US Driver License Booklet located?
8. Will you have a minimum age/appearance for carding or will you card everyone? Will you card all guests after (9) p.m.?
9. Where will you post signs about your alcohol service policy?
10. Where will you post signs informing customers about alcohol laws?
11. How will you discourage over intoxication? Will you deny guests entry if they are intoxicated?
12. How will you handle situations where it appears someone is purchasing alcohol for an underage person?
13. How will you make reasonable efforts to prevent an obviously intoxicated person from driving home?
14. How will you prevent employees or customers from drinking on the premises after hours?
15. Will management support employee’s decisions to refuse sale to individuals who are overly intoxicated, under the age of 21, or intended for someone underage?
16. Will you conduct Youth Alcohol Compliance Checks/Self Audit? How often?
17. Are there rewards for employees who pass Youth Alcohol Compliance checks?
18. What are the consequences for violating this alcohol service policy? Warning? Probation? Suspension? Termination?
