Mayor Rybak Announces “Great City Forums”

Three Speeches Will Frame Rybak’s Great City Agenda, Engage Public Dialogue

NEWS RELEASE
January 19, 2006

Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today announced that he will hold a series of three “Great City Forums” to lay out his priorities for the City and engage community dialogue around key issues. At the forums Mayor Rybak will speak to the three key values that he outlined in his Inaugural Address earlier this month: 1) Laying the groundwork for the next generation; 2) Reweaving the urban fabric; and 3) Closing the gaps between haves and have-nots. The Great City Forums will build up to the Mayor’s April State of the City Address.

“These values lay the groundwork for an ambitious agenda that will allow Minneapolis to rightfully claim its place as the Great American City of our time. We should settle for nothing less, Rybak said.”

At each forum Rybak will outline ways to realize these values with initiatives and programs grounded in a commitment to core city services. “We will run this city well, but run it for a reason,” Rybak said.

Each forum will include time for public dialogue and will be followed with an online interactive blog hosted by Mayor Rybak. “I will lay out my vision for the New Minneapolis, but I will also encourage dialogue about these issues and call for action from citizens to get involved,” Rybak said.

Getting Youth Ready by 21 with 21st Century Skills will be the Mayor’s first Great City Forum.

The Mayor’s first Great City Forum will be Tuesday, January 31st and will address why and how to lay the groundwork for the next generation to succeed. The forum follows a number of recently-announced city initiatives that Mayor Rybak feels carry out this value, including the Power of You college tuition initiative, STEP UP summer jobs, and Career and College Centers in Minneapolis high schools.

“Too many children lack hope, purpose, and strong families. We need a city where young people are ready by 21 for college, career and life. As Minnesota struggles to compete in an increasingly global economy, this state’s greatest asset is the children of the next generation of Minneapolis. We all have a responsibility and an interest in helping to prepare the next generation for the future,” Rybak said.
