Mayor Rybak Launches Effort to Activate Residents

“Great City Take Action” Kicks-off April 17th During National Volunteer Week

April 4, 2007 (MINNEAPOLIS) -- Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak is launching a new initiative during National Volunteer Week to encourage residents to roll up their sleeves and get involved to make Minneapolis a better city.

The new initiative, called The Great City Take Action will recruit and mobilize residents to get involved to help improve Minneapolis. Working with Hands On Twin Cities and their connection to hundreds of local community-based organizations, The Great City Take Action will hold four public forums throughout the year around top priorities for the City of Minneapolis:

  • Reweaving the Urban Fabric with Clean, Green Neighborhoods
  • Making Minneapolis a Safe Place to Call Home
  • Closing the Gaps with an Economy that Works for Everyone
  • Preparing the Next Generation for Their Future

At The Great City Take Action forums, residents will get information about big issues facing Minneapolis and immediately get connected to current volunteer opportunities with City Boards and community organizations working directly on these issues. Through this initiative, residents will “learn, serve and be the change” to make Minneapolis a Great City.

In his recent State of the City Address Mayor Rybak said that the key to Minneapolis’ success is its vast middle class, and that keeping a strong middle-class means creating a City that is safe, has affordable places to live, provides good jobs, has strong neighborhoods, and is committed to its children’s future.

“City government can’t do all of this work this alone,” Mayor Rybak said. “We need strong partnerships with our schools, community groups and businesses. We also need individual residents to get engaged to help build a Great City together. We need a vision, but we also need action. Don’t just complain – do something to make our City better.”

The first Great City Take Action forum, “Reweaving the Urban Fabric,” will focus on getting people involved with environmental issues and neighborhood improvement programs. The forum will take place Tuesday, April 17th from 6 - 8 pm at the historic Capri Theatre to coincide with National Volunteer Week April 15-21 and Earth Day April 22.

The Great City Take Action forums are free and open to the public, but registration is requested. For more information and to register for the forum visit my www.ci.minneapolis.mn.us/mayor or www.handsontwincities.org.
