Mayor Rybak Chooses Alex Jackson as Fire Chief

27-year MFD veteran, Jackson brings solid leadership and experience

June 9, 2008 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today announced that he has chosen Interim Fire Chief Alex Jackson to be the City’s next Fire Chief. Jackson has been serving as Interim Fire Chief since April when former Chief Jim Clack left Minneapolis to serve as the Fire Chief for the City of Baltimore.

“Chief Jackson brings outstanding administrative and operating experience to the fire department and he is exactly the kind of leader we need to keep our strong fire department moving forward in the right direction,” Mayor Rybak said.

“In a city that prides itself on emergency preparedness and response, Jackson is the right person to take our fire department into the future,” Rybak added. “We are fortunate to have extremely strong leadership in our fire department and I am confident that with Chief Jackson at the helm, we can continue our aggressive focus to keep Minneapolis safe.”

Chief Jackson has been with the Minneapolis Fire Department for more than 27 years. Prior to becoming Interim Chief, Jackson also served as Assistant Chief, Deputy Chief of Personnel, Fire Captain, Fire Motor Operator and Firefighter.

“I am deeply honored that the Mayor has chosen me to lead the fire department and I will do my best to ensure that we keep our focus on protecting public safety,” Jackson said. “We are a strong department and we deliver top-notch service to the residents of Minneapolis – a practice that will not change under my leadership.”

Mayor Rybak will formally submit Interim Chief Alex Jackson as Fire Chief to the City’s Executive Committee on June 25. The City Council’s Public Safety and Regulatory Services Committee will hold a public hearing and vote to approve Jackson next month, after which he must be confirmed by the City Council.
