Mayor Rybak Applauds Crown Center Project

Revitalization project brings more than 100 jobs to Northeast

October 22, 2008 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak today applauded the opening of the new Crown Center revitalization project in Northeast Minneapolis at 1331 Tyler St, NE. The once blighted property is now home to a bustling office development bringing more than 100 jobs and businesses to the area, including medical technology company Tactile Technology and architecture firm James Dayton Design.

“During this time of economic uncertainty, Crown Center is exactly the kind of revitalization we need,” Mayor Rybak said. “As Minneapolis continues to grow and more businesses chose to relocate in urban neighborhoods, we are so excited to be attracting such strong medical technology and creative arts businesses.”

Minneapolis was faced with a difficult problem at this landmark site. Once a steel fabrication facility where World War II B-26 wings were made, extensive environmental contamination deterred reinvestment and rehabilitation. The City worked with Hillcrest Development, LLLP and its partners to identify potential funding sources and craft competitive grant applications, resulting in five grants awards, totaling more than $1.6 million. In addition, the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, Metropolitan Council and Hennepin County funded contamination site clean-up.

The site’s buildings have been cleared of harmful vapors and hazardous materials, new and relocated businesses are filling the buildings with commerce, and the positive effects of redevelopment and creativity are rippling out into the broader neighborhood.

“Minneapolis is grateful for our partnership with Hillcrest, which has resulted in this wonderful opportunity in Northeast,” Mayor Rybak said. “With open arms we welcome these great businesses to Minneapolis. The Crown Center project demonstrates the positive results that can be realized when city, county, regional and state governments cooperate with developers to create jobs, attract companies, and help business access top talent.”
