Mayor Hodges Announces Nomination of Robin Hutcheson as Director of Public Works
June 20, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges announced today that she is nominating Robin Hutcheson to serve as director of the City’s Department of Public Works.
“Robin Hutcheson has the right combination of experience and vision, and I am confident she is the right person to continue and accelerate the progress we’ve made under Steve Kotke, our Director of Public Works who retired in May,” said Mayor Hodges. “Drinking water, storm and sanitary sewers, garbage and recycling: our residents rely on these essential services every day. We must keep these services functioning well while also seizing opportunities to address our greatest challenges.”
The nomination of Robin Hutcheson will be brought to the City’s Executive Committee on Wednesday, June 22, 2016. This will be followed by a public hearing to be scheduled in the Transportation & Public Works Committee chaired by Council Member Kevin Reich.
“With glowing enthusiasm, Robin Hutcheson steps up to the challenge of running Minneapolis Public Works, an organization that is composed of multiple departments, that makes up the City’s largest section of employment and budget, and that both spends and generates revenue,” said Council Member Reich. “Her skills and dynamic personality can confidently join the incredible division leaders and personnel and well-functioning department instituted by Director Kotke.”
“This is a moment of incredible opportunity for our street infrastructure,” continued Mayor Hodges. “After years of budget cuts and chronic under-investment, the City approved a historic plan to reinvest in city streets and parks. We also approved a complete streets policy to ensure safety for all users and access for all neighborhoods. In Robin Hutcheson, we will have a dynamic leader who will collaborate with Council Members, City staff and our partners at other agencies to keep Minneapolis moving forward toward a sustainable 21st Century future.”

Her division is responsible for the planning, design and operation of the of the transportation system. During her tenure, the City constructed its first streetcar, vastly expanded the complete streets program, and improved safety for everyone traveling. The Transportation Division is also responsible for many routine functions that improve the quality of life for all residents and facilitate business activity. In her role, she has been an advocate for great public infrastructure, and a successful collaborator to bring Salt Lake City’s resources together.
Prior to her work at Salt Lake City, she spent 16 years as a transportation consultant in the private sector, working on projects throughout the Intermountain West and also in Europe. Robin’s consulting career included foundational work in traffic analysis and transportation design, later focusing on sustainable transportation solutions for cities of all sizes.
“I am drawn to Minneapolis by its connection to nature, great neighborhoods, and commitment to people,” said Robin Hutcheson. “There are already so many accomplishments to be proud of, and I also see a great opportunity for Public Works to play an essential role moving forward. I’ve loved the time I’ve spent in Minneapolis, and I look forward to making Minneapolis my new home.”
