Robin Hutcheson Unanimously Confirmed as Director of Public Works
July 22, 2016 (MINNEAPOLIS) – Today, the Minneapolis City Council unanimously confirmed Robin Hutcheson to lead the City’s Department of Public Works.
“Robin Hutcheson has the right combination of experience and vision, and I am glad that the City Council agrees that she is the right person to continue and accelerate the progress we’ve made over the last decade,” said Mayor Hodges. “In Robin Hutcheson, we have a dynamic leader who will collaborate with Council Members, City staff and our partners at other agencies to keep Minneapolis moving forward toward a sustainable 21st Century future.”
“With glowing enthusiasm, Robin Hutcheson steps up to the challenge of running Minneapolis Public Works, an organization that is composed of multiple departments, that makes up the City’s largest section of employment and budget, and that both spends and generates revenue,” said Transportation and Public Works Committee Chair Council Member Reich. “Her skills and dynamic personality will confidently join the incredible division leaders and personnel of this well-functioning department.”

Mayor Hodges nominated Hutcheson on June 20th, and she received a public hearing and an approval vote in the City Council’s Transportation & Public Works Committee on July 12th. Today’s consideration by the full council was the final step in the confirmation process. Hutcheson will serve a two-year term, at which point she is subject to re-nomination.
Robin Hutcheson was the Transportation Division Director in Salt Lake City, Utah since 2012, earning a reputation as a practical innovator who gets things done. The Transportation Division is responsible for the planning, design and operation of the of the transportation system. During her tenure, the City constructed its first streetcar, vastly expanded the complete streets program, and improved safety for everyone traveling. The Transportation Division is also responsible for many routine functions that improve the quality of life for all residents and facilitate business activity. In her role, she was an advocate for great public infrastructure, and a successful collaborator to bring Salt Lake City’s resources together.
Prior to her work at Salt Lake City, she spent 16 years as a transportation consultant in the private sector, working on projects throughout the Intermountain West and also in Europe. Robin’s consulting career included foundational work in traffic analysis and transportation design, later focusing on sustainable transportation solutions for cities of all sizes.
Hutcheson succeeds Steve Kotke, who retired in May after 27 years of service with the City of Minneapolis.
