Uptown - Minneapolis’ Lakes District Tour on Thursday, May 24
As the City of Minneapolis grew, the lakes began to attract people seeking relief from the central city—from day-tripping fisherman to visitors of the area’s posh resorts on the shores of Lake Calhoun. This tour will show how the accessibility of the lakes was enhanced by being located on the new Minneapolis, Lyndale and Lake Calhoun Railway, first laid in 1879, which ran from downtown to the shores of Lake Calhoun.

Northeast Ride on Saturday, June 2
The Northeast Ride will take cyclists on a tour of Northeast Minneapolis, stopping at one of each of the neighborhoods’ parks. The ride will be just under 12 miles with stops in each Northeast Minneapolis neighborhood. The ride will take participants through the arts district, touring past the great Northeast creative buildings and historical landmarks like the Casket Arts Building and the Grain Belt Brewery, while using some of the new bike trails and bikeways. The event is organized by the Northeast CDC. Volunteers and riders welcome.

Bike Walk Week begins on Saturday, June 2

Midtown: A Place to Call Home - New Tour on Saturday, June 2
In the late 1870s, Minneapolis started to see a full-scale migration of Scandinavians which helped guide the pattern of urban growth of South Minneapolis, particularly around Lake Street. This tour will highlight the role that Lake Street has played historically and today as a home to the city’s new immigrants, including the small businesses and cultural organizations they established in their pursuit of the American Dream. This tour is part of the Lake Street Council’s Museum in the Streets™ project, coming summer 2012.

Cotton Tail Bicycle Trail - New Bicycle Tour on Saturday, June 2
Embark on an adventure that covers structures built from brick, steel panels, bronze, wood… and soft serve! Hear about architect Ralph Rapson, the Lustron Corporation and see one of the first Dairy Queens to open in Minnesota. The trail itself will be in the shape of a rabbit’s head and we’ll meet up with the most beloved rabbit in the neighborhood! Loring Hill: From Farm to Fabulous Tour on Sunday, June 3
Learn how Loring Hill began! Once the hilly half of a farm, this fascinating hillside neighborhood started when Joseph and Anna Johnson platted it into large lots that were snapped up prominent Minneapolitans. Soon the glamorous houses appeared and developed into the landscape we know today. The tour will stop at homes considered for historic designation, as well as two landmark churches.

Free Somali Work Readiness Training on Monday, June 4 – Thursday, June 14
After completing this 2-week workshop, attendees will have computer and job search skills as well as a completed resume! All instruction is in Somali.
Bike Walk to Work Day Minneapolis celebration on Thursday, June 7
The Minneapolis celebration features the national release of the new bicycling “forever” stamp from the United States Postal Service. The stamps will go on sale for the first time in the nation at this event. There will be a program featuring Mayor Rybak and bicycles towing trailers with visuals of the new stamps.

Tangletown and Minnehaha Creek Tour on Saturday, June 9
Platted in the nineteenth century, the neighborhood originally known as Washburn Park is an unusual community in south Minneapolis with its winding streets and impressive homes. Now known as Tangletown, for its curving streets, the area boasts landmark sites such as the Washburn Water Tower, the Harry Wild Jones House, Washburn Memorial Orphan Asylum (formerly on the site of Ramsey School), and the Minnehaha Creek, parkway, bridges, woods and trails.

Talk-It Hennepin Workshop: Putting It All Together—Naming and Claiming on Saturday, June 9
The local artist team will lead this “naming and claiming” workshop and participants will explore different ways to talk about the Avenue as a shared cultural experience. The workshop will identify work to be done to improve the space and how various tasks to move Hennepin Avenue forward might be shared. This event will also contribute to Northern Spark activities.

Pioneers and Soldier Memorial Cemetery Benefit Concert on Saturday, June 9
Low will headline the second annual benefit concert at Minneapolis’ Pioneers and Soldiers Cemetery on Saturday, June 9 with special guest, Zoo Animal. Proceeds from the performance will help support the Friends of the Cemetery’s efforts to restore the historic steel and limestone pillar fence that serves as the border of the cemetery along Lake Street and Cedar Avenue.

Greenway Glow on Saturday, June 9
The Greenway Glow (formerly the Greenway Challenge), is an illuminated night-time bike ride on the Midtown Greenway. Funds raised will help support the projects and programs of the Midtown Greenway Coalition, including the Trail Watch safety patrol, keeping the trail clean, safe and free of glass, outreach to communities surrounding the Greenway, and working with developers to encourage Greenway-friendly buildings.

The Minneapolis Uptown Market is a street market with local farmers, food vendors, artisans, craftspeople, and neighbors. Summer 2012 will be its fourth season. The market will run every Sunday through the end of September.

Open Streets on Sunday, June 10
By opening up the streets for people to walk, bike, run and skate for a day, we get an opportunity to experience our city in a whole new way. In the past the street was the hub of the community—it was a place to shop, mingle, gossip, and play. Open Streets gives this back while promoting healthy activity and sustainable transportation. Open Streets Minneapolis will be held on Lyndale Ave. S. from 22nd St. to 42nd St., and is an initiative of the Minneapolis Bicycle Coalition.
Como Harriet Streetcar Line Tour on Sunday, June 10
Explore the abandoned and reconstructed streetcar line. The tour will include remnants of the original Twin Cities Rapid Transit streetcar line, the former Lyndale Hotel site, the Museum’s car barn, the Linden Hills business district, concluding with ice cream and a vintage streetcar ride! This tour is co-sponsored by the Minnesota Streetcar Museum; cost is $10.

Basic Bike Maintenance Class on Thursday, May 24
Keeping your bike working isn’t rocket science, but it does take a little know-how and occasional grimy hands. This class includes tire inflation, brake adjustment, cleaning & lubricating a bike chain and changing a tube. Participants will receive free inner tube patch kits.
Call for Artists: Public Art Commission for the Veterans Memorial at Sheridan Memorial Park – applications due by Tuesday, May 29 at 10 a.m.
Artist selection is a two-part process. Interested Minnesota artists submit qualifications. A group of finalists will be selected by a jury and interviewed.

Public meeting on proposals for city-owned lots at Penn & Plymouth on Tuesday, May 29
The City of Minneapolis is hosting a public meeting at 6:00 pm at UROC to present the recommended projects for the two city-owned properties at Penn and Plymouth. Glenn Ford from Praxis will present his plans for a grocery store, and Hennepin County will present their plans for an interim parking lot to support Northpoint.

Martin Luther King Community Member Award – nominations due by Thursday, May 31
The Minneapolis Commission on Civil Rights will be awarding the first ever Martin Luther King Community Member Award. The Award will be presented to a Minneapolis resident—young or old—or Minneapolis-based organization that has worked to protect, support, or further the civil rights of the people of Minneapolis.

55+ Walking Series: Whittier & Stevens Square on Wednesday, June 6
Join other seniors and explore Minneapolis! Each stroll will explore a different area. Strolls take place on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays, March to August, and are 1.5 to 2 miles long.
Immersion into the World of Hearing Loss for People who are Hearing on Wednesday, June 6
In this fun, interactive experience, learn more about the vibrant Deaf Community and ways to effectively communicate with people with hearing loss. Also experience what it is like to have a simulated hearing loss. Sponsored by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Services (DHHS) Metro, a program of the MN Department of Human Services.
2012 Community Technology Survey - results and next steps on Wednesday, June 13
City leaders and staff will be hosting a number of meetings with residents, businesses, community groups, and many other stakeholders to share the survey results and get feedback about how to overcome the digital divide in Minneapolis. This is the first of four community meetings.

Stadium Village University Avenue Station Area Plan – public comment accepted through Thursday, June 14
Stadium Village is one of the most dynamic places in the Twin Cities. A draft plan for Stadium Village and the adjacent area along University Avenue SE is ready for review. These comments will be part of the plan’s official record when it moves into the City approval process and may influence its content.
Minneapolis Recovers: North Side Tornado
The area struck by the May 22, 2011 tornado is home to about 7,000 properties. Of those, about 3,700 were damaged by the storm. In the year since the tornado, the City, many government and non-profit partners, and thousands of volunteers have worked together to help people get back on their feet and rebuild a stronger north Minneapolis. Boards and Commissions – candidate applications still being accepted
Applications are still being accepted for open positions on three open boards and commissions that the City Council and Mayor will appoint this spring: Minneapolis Advisory Committee on People with Disabilities, the Neighborhood Community and Engagement Commission and the Senior Citizens Advisory Committee. Board and commission members in the City of Minneapolis provide valuable insights, help shape key policy decisions and provide community-based input into administration of services. The City is seeking applicants with a diversity of backgrounds and experiences to strengthen the work of the City. Application review began May 18, however, the positions are open until filled.

Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission (NCEC) elections - candidate application deadline: Friday, May 25
This year, neighborhood districts 2, 4, 6 and 8 are up for election through the neighborhood election process. Due to an unexpected resignation, there is also now a vacant seat in district 5. In addition, One (1) Mayoral and three (3) City Council positions are up for appointment through the City’s open appointment process.

Neighborhood electors needed for Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission (NCEC) elections – elector registration due to NCR by the end of the day on Wednesday, June 27
According to the procedures adopted on April 16, 2011, each neighborhood may appoint one elector and one alternate, and it is up to each neighborhood to determine how to appoint their electors and alternates. Neighborhood organizations are strongly encouraged to select electors at a well-publicized meeting with at least 40 days notice in order to maximize resident participation.
