Location and General Characteristics

The Bancroft neighborhood is located south of Powderhorn Lake, between 38 th Street East to the north and 42 nd Street East to the south, and between Chicago Avenue on the west and Cedar Avenue on the east. The neighborhood is named for the Bancroft elementary school, which was named for George Bancroft, an American historian born in 1800. The Bancroft neighborhood consists mostly of single-family houses built before 1940. The neighborhood also has some commercial development along Bloomington Avenue and 38 th Street.

Bancroft Community School in the Minneapolis School District still operating, was built in 1912.
