Households are smaller in East Isles than citywide. While the number of households in the neighborhood increased, the average household size shrank from 1.8 people in 1980 to 1.7 in 2000. In comparison the city had on average 2.3 people per household in 2000, an increase from 2.2 in 1980 and 1990.

In 2000 there were 1,984 households in the neighborhood, an increase of almost 8 percent from 1980. In 2000, family households were a quarter of the total, and households of people living alone and under 65 years old were almost half. People living together but not related were 21 percent, below the percentage of families. Households of people 65 and over living alone represented 7 percent of the total. Family households and households of senior residents living alone decreased from their 1980 share.

In 2000, more than half of the households in the neighborhood were people living alone. The level was higher than the 40 percent citywide.

More than half of the people 65 years and older in the neighborhood were living alone in 2000, compared to 37 percent citywide. The proportion increased in the neighborhood from the 1980 level while the city's proportion declined.

The proportion of families with children declined in the neighborhood from 36 percent in 1980 to 34 percent in 2000. But it increased in the city from 45 percent to 50 percent.
