Households

The total number of households in 2000 was 1,375, an increase of only 26 households from 1980. The average household size was greater than Minneapolis’ in 1980 and 1990 but equaled the citywide average in 2000.

The total number of households in the Hale neighborhood slightly increased from 1980 to 2000, but family households decreased. The difference was made up by increasing numbers of people living alone and unrelated people living together. The senior population living alone decreased by 120 people from 1980 to 2000.

In Hale, 27 percent of all householders lived alone, 13 percent below the citywide average in 2000.

The percentage of seniors living alone in Hale was roughly equal to the percentage of seniors living alone in Minneapolis in 1980. The percentage in Hale decreased by 4 percent in 1990 and then leveled off in 2000. This decrease coincided with an overall decrease in the senior population in Hale.

In 1980, 41 percent of families in Hale had a child or children under 18; that’s below the citywide average. The percentage increased to 47 percent in 1990 and 49 percent in 2000 but remained below the citywide percentage.
