Kenwood's labor force participation rate – those working, looking for a job or in the armed forces – dropped below the citywide rate in 1990, then climbed in 2000 to 72 percent, the same as the citywide rate. The proportion of people in the labor force in the city rose steadily throughout the period.
Kenwood has maintained lower unemployment rates than the city. Unemployment decreased continuously in Kenwood from 1980 to 2000, to reach a very low rate of 1.8 percent – about a third of the city rate. In contrast, the citywide rate increased in 1990 and dropped in 2000, but it remained high compared to 1980.
