The percentage of people living below the poverty level in Prospect Park increased significantly in both 1989 and 1999. In the latter year, one in three Prospect Park residents lived in poverty and the percentage of people in the neighborhood living below the poverty level was 16 points higher than in Minneapolis. The percentage of the population aged 65 years and over living below the poverty level was 6 percent in 1999, a decrease from 13 percent in 1989.

The number of families living below the poverty level declined from 20 percent in 1989 to 10 percent in 1999. During that same time, the number of families with children declined from 29 percent to 20 percent. The poverty level of families in Prospect Park rose in during the ‘80s, but then declined to historically low levels in 2000. In 1979 and 1989, the neighborhood had a higher percentage of its families and families with children living in poverty than the city did. In 1999 the trend reversed, and the proportion of families in poverty was lower in the neighborhood.
