Gigantic images meant to convey equality, fellowship and getting along with one another are on display at the Hennepin County Government Center North Plaza for the public art exhibition "Coexistence." The exhibit, which features 38 images - each 9 feet by 15 feet - will be on display through June 12 and is intended to serve as a forum of discussion about tolerance and equality.
Presented by the University of Minnesota's College of Liberal Arts (CLA), "Coexistence" was created by the Museum on the Seam in Jerusalem. Each poster is accompanied by a quotation from many of history's leading humanists and thinkers, from the Dalai Lama to Thomas Jefferson, Toni Morrison to Sigmund Freud, and Charles Darwin to John Lennon.
A formal ceremony marking the opening of the display will be held:
11:30 a.m., May 1, 2004
Featured speakers include Minneapolis Mayor R.T. Rybak, University of Minnesota College of Liberal Arts Dean Steven Rosenstone, and "Coexistence" curator Raphle Etgar
The "Coexistence" exhibition will be accompanied by a large number of related activities, sponsored by CLA academic centers and the Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul, and YWCA of Minneapolis. Activities include the Borderlands film festival, showing films of Turkey, Armenia and Greece at the U Film Society; a conference on the 10-year anniversary of the Rwanda genocide; an art contest by local children; and a youth dialogue on race.
