The Minneapolis Police are reminding drivers that even though this especially cold weather makes it tempting to leave your car running to warm up while you head back indoors, it can be an invitation to auto thieves.
Cases of auto theft have increased in recent weeks, in many cases because drivers have made it very easy for auto thieves by leaving their cars unattended and running with the keys in the ignition. Not only could it cost you your car, but leaving the keys in the ignition while the car is unattended is also against City ordinance, so you could be ticketed.
Even if the car’s doors are locked, a running vehicle is an easy target, because all a thief needs to do is break a window or jimmy a lock to get inside.
