“Town Limits” signs mark 150 years of growth and change

Minneapolis’ official sesquicentennial celebration starts July 18

People traveling on Minneapolis streets may begin to notice several new blue signs marking the town limits of Minneapolis, population 3,391. But you won’t find them on the borders of the city we know today—the new signs are much closer to Downtown, marking the town limits of Minneapolis as it existed in 1858. Not only do the signs underscore how Minneapolis has grown geographically in the last 150 years, but they also show a population figure that has grown by more than 100 times since then.

Six 1858 Town Limits signs are now posted at points along the city’s original border, to help commemorate Minneapolis’ 150th Anniversary. The City of Minneapolis will officially celebrate its sesquicentennial during the 2008 Aquatennial, July 18 – 27.
