Thanksgiving night is a once-a-year chance to enjoy a drive along Nicollet Mall

Thanksgiving evening, Nov. 22, is a once-a-year chance for folks to drive down Nicollet Mall and enjoy the holiday decorations. This year, the Downtown Improvement District Ambassadors have spruced up the Mall with more than half a million twinkle lights (if you connected the strings end to end, they’d stretch 23 miles—to Saint Paul and back!) On your trip down the Mall, you’ll see the light poles have been decked out with nearly 300 illuminated snowflakes and about 4,000 feet of natural garland. The Mall’s planters have also been newly replanted with more than 5,500 spruce tips.

Nicollet Mall is normally reserved for buses, taxis, and emergency vehicles, but City ordinance allows cars to drive down the Mall one evening a year, from 6 to 10 p.m. on Thanksgiving.

For this special occasion, the speed limit is 10 miles-per-hour and drivers are not allowed to pass another vehicle or stop anywhere along the Mall. If you want to take the drive, you must enter and exit Nicollet Mall either at Washington Avenue or Grant Street.

And don’t forget, the Target Holidazzle Parade begins Friday, Nov. 23. Holidazzle parades down Nicollet Mall begin at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays through Dec. 23. For more information about the Holidazzle Parade, visit www.holidazzle.com.
