Minneapolis and Xcel Energy join federal Better Buildings Challenge for energy efficiency

The City of Minneapolis and Xcel Energy have been selected to join the U.S. Department of Energy Better Buildings Energy Data Accelerator initiative launched to build a cleaner, more sustainable energy future. The initiative is part of President Obama’s Climate Action Plan to engage leaders in state and local governments, utilities and industry to demonstrate innovative policies and programs that will transform the energy efficiency market and cut building energy waste.  Minneapolis and Xcel Energy join 19 city-utility pairs across the U.S. that have committed to developing tools to help building owners understand their energy use to save energy and money.

Minneapolis has already begun taking steps with its own Climate Action Plan and building energy use disclosure ordinance. Minneapolis has released its first report detailing the energy use of 102 public buildings in Minneapolis, including schools, libraries, office buildings and other City, County and Park Board properties in 2012.

Xcel Energy is committed to helping the city of Minneapolis meet its sustainability goals and to providing the city with even more choices for reliable, clean and cost-effective energy. The Better Buildings Energy Data Accelerator initiative is one example of how the city and Xcel Energy can work together. And the initiative will complement the energy efficiency and rebate programs Xcel Energy offers building owners and other customers to help them better manage and control their energy use. Businesses can choose from a variety of affordable options, ranging from customized solutions to equipment efficiency and renewable energy programs.

The U.S. Department of Energy will support Better Buildings Energy Data Accelerator partners with training, technical assistance, tools and resources.
