Tour Minneapolis community gardens Sept. 13
A special community garden tour Sept. 13 is open to the public to highlight the green space and beauty that community gardens add to urban neighborhoods and the opportunities for neighbors from different cultures and generations to meet and work together.
The City of Minneapolis passed a resolution to honor Community Garden Day. There are more than 243 community gardens in Minneapolis – 194 of them are food production gardens – providing opportunities to more than 5,500 young people and adults to garden. More than 38 acres in Minneapolis is community garden space. The City of Minneapolis has vacant lots available to qualifying groups to lease for community gardens.
Community gardens reduce the urban heat island effect and filter rainwater, helping to keep our rivers, lakes, and groundwater clean. They also provide horticultural therapy and exercise, helping to draw people out of their homes and get active. Community gardens also provide healthy food, reducing the risks of diabetes and obesity.
