Packaging fair for food businesses March 12

To help restaurants get ready for new rules on environmentally acceptable food packaging that take effect on Earth Day, April 22, the City is holding a packaging fair Thursday, March 12. Food business owners and managers will have a chance to talk with the experts and vendors; find out what resources are available to help them make the switch; and see examples of compliant products including cups (both hot and cold), plates, bowls, serving boats and to-go containers (single compartment and multiple compartment). Many products will be displayed in both recyclable and compostable options.

The ordinance requires food and beverages prepared for immediate consumption or for takeout be placed in reusable, recyclable or compostable packaging. In addition, recyclable materials used onsite must be recycled, and compostable materials used onsite must be composted. The rules apply to all food establishments that serve or give away food prepared onsite for immediate consumption. This includes all restaurants; grocery store deli cases; food trucks and other mobile vendors; and temporary, short-term and seasonal food vendors.
