Open Streets Minneapolis kicks off eighth season this weekend
Lyndale Avenue South hosts the first 2018 Open Streets event
The 2018 Open Streets Minneapolis season kicks off Sunday, June 10 on 30 blocks of Lyndale Avenue South. Open Streets is a chance for people to explore their neighborhoods and local businesses in a car-free environment.
Open Streets Lyndale will take place 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday along Lyndale Avenue South from West 22nd to West 54th streets. The area will be closed to motorized traffic. Open Streets gives people an opportunity to enjoy the street on bicycle, foot, wheelchair, skateboard or roller skates and will be packed with activities for people of all ages, including free yoga, bicycle repair, live music and children’s activities.
Open Streets Lyndale drew 45,000 people in 2017—the largest attendance for an Open Streets event last year. Overall, Open Streets events drew 101,000 people in 2017.
Note: The traffic detour for the Hennepin Uptown reconstruction project will be moved to Bryant Avenue South during Open Streets Lyndale.
The City Council has approved seven Open Streets Minneapolis events for the 2018 season. Lyndale Open Streets will be followed by Lake/Minnehaha (Sunday, July 22), Northeast (Sunday, Aug. 5), Franklin (Sunday, Aug. 26), West Broadway (Saturday, Sept. 15), Nicollet (Sunday, Sept. 23) and University of Minnesota (Sunday, Sept. 30). The events run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The City of Minneapolis and Our Streets Minneapolis are also collaborating on a new social media campaign called #WeWalkMpls to highlight the stories of residents of all ages and backgrounds who choose to walk for commuting and a primary way to get around the city. Our Streets Minneapolis will be collecting stories from walkers during the Open Streets Lyndale event. Share your walking stories by using the hashtag #WeWalkMpls on social media.
