Open Streets University of Minnesota + Motley set for Sunday, Sept. 8

Opens Streets University of Minnesota + Motley takes place Sunday, Sept. 8 – the fourth Opens Streets event along the U of M campus.

The event, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., will take place on 14th Avenue Southeast, University Avenue Southeast and Oak Street Southeast. It will give people a chance to enjoy the streets in a car-free environment with music, food, art, community resources and more.

The City of Minneapolis Public Works Department will have a booth at University and 15th Avenue Southeast to share information about the development of the Minneapolis Transportation Action Plan and Vision Zero Action Plan. The Transportation Action Plan will be a 10-year plan to implement the transportation vision outlined in the Minneapolis 2040 Comprehensive Plan. The Vision Zero Action Plan will be a three-year plan to advance the City’s commitment to ending traffic fatalities and severe injuries resulting from traffic crashes on our streets by 2027.

The City of Minneapolis and Our Streets Minneapolis are also collaborating for the second year on a social media campaign called #WeWalkMpls to highlight the stories of people who choose to walk for commuting and a primary way to get around the city. There will be a pop-up on Oak Street Southeast between University Avenue Southeast and Beacon Street Southeast to participate in a photo booth for the campaign. Share your walking stories by using the hashtag #WeWalkMpls on social media.

Upcoming Open Streets Minneapolis events for the 2019 season include West Broadway (Saturday, Sept. 14) and Nicollet (Sunday, Sept. 22). The events run 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The City of Minneapolis and Our Streets Minneapolis are also seeking route ideas for the 2020 season. Applications are due Oct. 3, 2019.
