Police Honor Guard celebrates 20th anniversary

The Minneapolis Police Honor Guard recently marked its 20th anniversary. The specialized unit was founded in May 1992 to conduct memorials to honor the City’s fallen officers and represent the Minneapolis Police Department in memorial ceremonies and other special events.

The Honor Guard is staffed by 26 sworn officers who volunteer to represent the Minneapolis Police Department at funerals of officers who have died in the line of duty, as well as active and retired members of the Department. The Honor Guard stands at the casket or remains at a wake, serves as pallbearers and renders a final salute at interment services. The Minneapolis Police Honor Guard works closely with family, clergy and funeral home directors to assure the family receives comfort and support through a difficult time.

Officers continuously train throughout the year for this special assignment. The Honor Guard has attended hundreds of memorial services and funerals over the years throughout Minnesota and as far away as Florida and Washington. They also participate in the Candlelight Vigil service during national Police Week for Fallen Officers the Minnesota Capitol as well as in Washington, D.C.

Of the 10 founding members of the Honor Guard, five are still active. They include: Captain Sally Weddel, Sergeants David Gray and Gary Manty, Officers Lisa Davis and Steven Laux.
