Firefighters Museum showcases I-35W Bridge collapse rescue effort in new exhibit
A new exhibit opening to the public on June 30 at the Firefighters Hall and Museum, will showcase the extraordinary rescue efforts for firefighters and others in the immediate aftermath of the I-35W Bridge collapse on the fateful evening of Aug. 1, 2007.
The exhibit — 81 MINUTES: After the Bridge Collapsed — will examine the extraordinary rescue effort from the first call to dispatch to the last victim cleared from the bridge. The exhibit examines the experiences of firefighters working in five arenas: the north side, the south side, the 10th Avenue Bridge, the Mississippi River, and the dispatch center. The stories of responders at each of these locations will anchor the exhibit. The exhibit also takes a close look at the success of the Incident Command that day and the multi-agency training that led to an efficient bridge evacuation, the collaboration between firefighters and residents, and the impact on the Twin Cities community.
81 MINUTES will open on June 30 alongside the Minnesota Historical Society’s traveling exhibit MINNESOTA DISASTERS, which the museum will host for two months. The 81 MINUTES exhibit will be on permanent display in the museum.
In conjunction with the exhibit, the museum will host a Family Home Disaster Preparedness Day on Saturday, July 21 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. organized by Casidy Anderson, Community Risk Reduction Officer of the Minneapolis Fire Department. The day will feature fire truck rides, the Minneapolis Fire Department Safe Escape Trailer, tours, crafts, and a fire safety bag for families to take home.
The Firefighters Hall and Museum, located at 664 22nd Ave. NE, Minneapolis, is a 30-year-old museum that serves as both a meeting space for firefighters and the neighborhood and a family-oriented museum featuring fire rigs and artifacts showcasing the history of firefighting. Summer museum hours (through Labor Day) are Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
