Northstar rail fares reduced, coupons for two free train rides available

Beginning Wednesday, Aug. 1, weekday Northstar commuter rail fares will be reduced. The new lower fares are valid through April 30, 2013. To encourage commuters to try riding the train to work, Metro Transit is offering a coupon good for two free days of round-trip rides on the Northstar commuter rail.

If you already use a Metropass

Employees who already use Metropass will see fare reductions on the Northstar commuter rail effective Aug. 1. (A Metropass is a pre-paid plastic card that riders place in front of a scanner to ride the bus, light rail or train.)

Here are the fare changes:

Coupon for two free rides on Northstar

Employees who are considering commuting to work via the Northstar can sample the smooth ride and convenience of riding the Northstar train thanks to a Metro Transit coupon that is good for two days of free roundtrip rides. The coupon is reserved for employees who do not currently have a Metropass and would be using the train to commute to work. Coupons will become available sometime during the week of July 30 - Aug. 3. To get a Northstar free ride coupon, contact Nancy Skogrand, Human Resources, at [email protected] or 612-673-3761.

No-cost August Metropasses for new sign-ups

Metro Transit is also offering a special incentive to encourage new Metropass enrollees. Any employee who signs up for a Metropass in August will be given a temporary pass making it possible to immediately begin riding the Northstar, bus or light rail.

During August, new Metropass enrollees can ride as much as they like until they have their photo taken and receive their permanent Metropass card – through September if needed. (The temporary Metropass will work for all MetroTransit modes of transportation: train, light rail and buses. No extra money needs to be placed on the temporary Metropass for rides costing $3 or less. Extra money can be loaded onto the temporary pass to cover the additional cost to board the Northstar train at Elk River or Big Lake.)

About Metropass

If traffic irritations or the price of gas and parking have you thinking about taking the bus or train, don’t forget that as a City of Minneapolis employee, you are eligible to buy a pass for unlimited bus or light rail rides at a discounted price.

The Metropass fee for most City employees is $65 per month. The monthly fee represents a significant savings over the daily rush hour fares of $2.25 (local routes) or $3 (express routes) which can add up to $90 or $120 for a month’s worth of commuting back and forth from home to work. Once you enroll, there’s nothing else you need to do. Your Metropass fee is automatically deducted from your paycheck on a pre-tax basis.

Learn more about the Metropass benefit or contact Nancy Skogrand at 612-673-3761 or [email protected].
