1,298 vaccinated during fall flu shot clinics

The results are in: thanks to 19 worksite flu vaccination clinics, 1,298 employees got vaccinated against the flu this autumn. Of those, 755 people also took advantage of the opportunity to get a booster shot against whooping cough.

The convenient worksite vaccination clinics, which were organized by the Health and Family Support Department, were provided by Medica and the Minnesota Visiting Nurse Agency.

If you didn’t get a flu shot this fall, there’s still time to get vaccinated and avoid the flu’s fever, aches and fatigue. Flu can also result in dangerous complications that can cause pneumonia or land you in the hospital.

Due to the higher incidence of pertussis/whooping cough in the community, health professionals also advise you to consider getting a pertussis (Tdap) booster. Pertussis is a highly contagious disease caused by bacteria that affects the lungs. It is spread through the air in droplets produced during coughing or sneezing, and typically starts with cold-like symptoms that can include a runny nose, congestion, fever and a mild cough. But after one to two weeks, severe coughing can begin. Unlike the common cold, pertussis can become a series of coughing fits that continues for weeks. Pertussis can cause violent and rapid coughing, over and over, until the air is gone from the lungs and forcing the patient to inhale with a loud "whooping" sound.

Medica — the City’s health insurance provider — covers the full cost of the flu shot or Flu Mist as well as the Tdap vaccine without deductibles or co-pays. You can get a vaccination from your health provider or at a number of pharmacies. To find out where you can get a flu vaccine, use the Minnesota Department of Health Website’s Find a Flu Shot Clinic feature.
