Chief Human Resource Officer Patience Ferguson nominated Joyce for her commitment to employees and the City:

“Thanks to Joyce Traver’s leadership, the Human Resources Department launched the employee health and wellness program in 2009 as a strategy to decrease health care costs and increase employee engagement. As options have since been added to the program to better meet the needs of the City’s diverse workforce, participation in the program has nearly doubled.

“Employees’ health-risk scores have improved since the program was created, and those scores directly relate to health care costs. Increasing the number of employees with low-risk and moderate-risk scores is crucial to controlling health care costs. Since beginning the employee health and wellness program, the number of employees with low-risk scores has grown by 6 percentage points. Making healthy lifestyle changes and receiving proper medical care help people lower health-risk scores. Thanks to Joyce’s leadership and commitment to health and wellness, enterprise-wide health care costs decreased by 3 percent this year.

“In alignment with the City’s values of innovation and creativity, Joyce continues to go above and beyond by identifying new ideas designed to drive continuous improvement. For example, Joyce and her team engaged the Fire Department with the goal of identifying new ways to promote health and wellness among its workers. Using the feedback gained, new health and wellness strategies were created to meet the specific needs of the Fire Department. As a result, Chef Marshall O’Brien was contacted to consult on nutrition in fire houses.

“Joyce continues to go over and beyond in her commitment to employees and the City of Minneapolis.”
