New paid parental leave policy begins
The City Council voted unanimously last week to approve apaid parental leave policy for eligible City employees. The policy provides up to three weeks of paid leave following the birth or adoption of a child.
Under the policy, employees will be eligible for the leave if they:
- Are eligible to accrue sick days.
- Are the biological parent or adoptive parent of the child, or spouse or registered domestic partner of the biological or adoptive parent.
- Have had no disciplinary actions in the previous two years for the misuse of sick leave.
Eligible employees will receive paid leave equal to the number of hours or days usually worked in a three-week period. The leave must be requested and used within 12 weeks of the birth or adoption of a child, and it must be used in a solid block of time. The leave will run concurrently with other parental leave available under federal and State laws.
Retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015
The City Council made the paid parental leave policy retroactive to Jan. 1, 2015. Employees who are eligible for the leave retroactively will be credited with up to three weeks of paid time off.
