New health and wellness classes: Sign up and earn while you learn

You can sign up now for these classes in the employee health and wellness program. Pick a topic that interests you and earn 25 points when you self-report your attendance by Aug. 31 at

Scientists now understand why our positive or negative attitudes dramatically impact us and our relationships. In this class, you will discuss the ability to benefit from the power of positive thinking by making changes in thought processes and perspectives.

When: noon-1 p.m., Tuesday, July 28
Where: City of Lakes Building, Room 101

Learn the basics of the most commonly used alternative and complementary healing arts including chiropractic medicine, homeopathy, herbal and Chinese medicine, naturopathy, acupuncture, and therapeutic massage. See how these healing arts can contribute to your overall health and wellness and determine whether alternative medicine is for you.

When: noon-1 p.m., Thursday, July 30
Where: City of Lakes Building, Room 101

This program will define emotional eating and identify reasons for it. You will explore your personal food history and examine the relationship between your mood and your cravings. You’ll also look at questions to learn more about your eating behavior. You will learn steps, best practices and resources to stop emotional eating.

When: noon-1 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7
Where: City of Lakes Building, Room 101

This class will give patients a set of specific tools to make the best use of their doctor visits, including preparing before the appointment and communicating during and after the appointment. Attendees will also learn about the health procedure “shopping” tool that rewards members of the City’s health insurance plan with $25 for choosing lower cost providers for certain procedures.

When: noon-1 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 11

How to enroll in a health and wellness class

  1. Log into HRIS.
  2. Click “Learning and Development” (left side of screen).
  3. Click “Search Catalog” and type the course title (The power of positive thinking, alternative medicine, emotional eating, or how to speak with your physician).
  4. Click the course title then “View Details” to check for available seats.
  5. Click “Enroll” then “Submit Enrollment.”

To self-report your attendance

  1. Log in to
  2. Click on the “Health and Wellness” tab.
  3. Go to the “Rewards” page.
  4. Click on “Attend a City of Minneapolis-sponsored wellness class” and then the “Earn” button.
  5. Enter the name of the class and the date attended.
