Watch out for the “iOS Crash Report” scam

A new scam targets owners of iPhones and iPads.

The scam starts as a fake error message labeled “iOS Crash Report” that says the device has crashed because of a configuration problem. The message urges people to call “Apple Technical Support” at a fraudulent toll-free number, where they’ll be asked to pay a support fee of $80 using a credit card to fix the device.

This scam is a variation of the “Technical Support Scam,” a kind of fraud conducted by phone or email that presents itself as a legitimate support service, contacting potential victims about a computer infection or expired license. In this case, the scammers use JavaScript to display the messages about a so-called “iOS crash.” Complicating matters, the JavaScript messages continuously appear and can be hard to stop. Turning off JavaScript in Safari is the easiest solution, but leaving it disabled will significantly affect the user’s browsing experience, so if this happens to you, you might consider installing a different browser such as Google Chrome or DuckDuckGo.

Remember: Microsoft and Apple won’t contact you, either by phone or email, if there’s an issue with your device. And never give your iCloud username and password or your bank details over the phone.
