Celebrate Public Health Week with free yoga, salsa dance lessons, prizes and more

It’s National Public Health Week April 3-9, and the Health Department has planned several free events for employees.

Weeklong activities

Mental and emotional health day
Noon-1 p.m., Monday, April 4
Rotunda, City Hall

Relax and restore during your busy workday with a mindfulness session that focuses on breathing and awareness of your body led by the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing. Visit the employee wellness fair for healthy resources from representatives including:

Talk to the Wellness Committee about how to save 25 percent when you register for a farm share in the City’s community supported agriculture (CSA) employee program during Public Health Week.

Public Health Hero Award Ceremony and nutritional health day
11:30 a.m.-1 p.m., Tuesday, April 5
Rotunda, City Hall

The Local Public Health Hero Awards will honor and recognize the accomplishments of community partners whose service to public health activities transforms and strengthens the lives of our residents and visitors.

Nutritional health day will include interactive booths staffed by Health Department employees who will:

Social and environmental health day
Noon-1 p.m., Wednesday, April 6
Rotunda, City Hall

Take salsa dance lessons. Learn about the environmental initiatives taking place in the City.

“On Beauty” movie screening
5-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 6
Coffman Memorial Union Theater, 300 Washington Ave. SE

The movie discusses how perceptions of beauty need to change. Learn more.  

Physical health day
Volleyball, dodgeball, winners of step challenge announced, yoga
Thursday, April 7

Form a team and play dodgeball and volleyball noon to 1 p.m. at Field Day at Father Hennepin Bluff Park.

Employees with the most steps in the step count challenge will receive their prizes.

Do yoga from 12:30-1:30 p.m. in Room 319 City Hall. The session will be power vinyasa yoga, in which students fluidly move from one pose to the next while connecting their breath to their movements.

Reproductive health day
Noon-1 p.m., Friday, April 8
Rotunda, City Hall

Learn about safer sex and sexually transmitted infections.
