Save on local produce deliveries during Public Health Week; employee discount ends April 9
You’ll save 25 percent when you register for a farm share in the City’s community supported agriculture (CSA) employee program during Public Health Week, which ends April 9. Sign up to get fresh, locally grown produce delivered to you at the Public Service Center or one of the CSA’s other Twin Cities drop-off sites.
CSAs deliver locally grown produce to their members regularly during the growing season. The local farms in the City’s employee CSA program are:
- Hmong American Farmers Association (HAFA)
- Shared Ground Farmers’ Cooperative
- Women’s Environmental Initiative
The Hmong American Farmers Association and Shared Ground Farmers’ Cooperative will deliver Wednesdays every week or every other week at the Public Service Center in addition to their other regular drop-off sites. (HAFA drop-off sites and Shared Ground drop-off sites). The Women’s Environmental Initiative will deliver Tuesdays every week or every other week at the Public Service Center in addition to the regular drop-off sites listed on their website. There’s no need to pay for parking if you choose to pick your delivery up at the Public Service Center — just pull into the lot off of Fourth Street and grab your box of produce from right inside the back door.
CSA members pay for the entire season of produce up front or in installments, which helps the farmers cover their growing costs. The cost varies by farm, but the options range from $275-$595 for the season depending on the number of deliveries and the amount of produce delivered.
How to sign up and get your discount
Register for one of the CSAs during Public Health Week April 3-9 using these links and instructions:
- Hmong American Farmers Association registration page (Choose your drop-off location, and enter “MPLS” as the “Coupon Code”).
- Shared Ground Farmers’ Cooperative registration page (Choose your drop-off location, and follow these instructions).
- Women’s Environmental Initiative registration page (Choose “City of Minneapolis Employee” under “Drop Site Locations” if you want your CSA box dropped off at the Public Service Center or select one of the other public locations. Enter “Go Twins” as the “Minneapolis City Employees Discount Code”).
Tips and tricks to get the most out of a CSA
- Split a share with a coworker or friend.
- Use recipe websites. Sites such as Epicurious, The Kitchn and AllRecipes give you ideas for the produce that comes in your CSA. Type a food such as “collard greens” into the search bar and you’ll get a list of recipes and recipe reviews.
- Have some go-to recipes. When life gets busy, turn to easy standby recipes such as stir-fried vegetables with a simple sauce, salads with a few different dressings or sautéed vegetables over pasta.
- Make a plan. On your CSA pickup day, make a list of everything that came in the box. Plan a week’s worth of meals for the produce, and go to the grocery store to pick up items you may need to complete recipes.
- Chop the greens off root vegetables. Carrots, beets, turnips, radishes and other root vegetables often come with their greens still attached. Chop the tops off to prevent the greens from leaching moisture from the vegetables. Don’t forget to look up recipes for the greens too.
- Eat the most perishable produce first. Follow the FIFO principle (first in, first out) when putting your produce away. Keep your list of produce in a prominent place in the kitchen, and cross off items as you use them.
- Learn to pickle. Pickling is a great way to preserve produce.
- Freeze produce.
