Organics recycling videos earn accolades

The Communications Department received awards for two videos staff created in partnership with Solid Waste and Recycling to roll out organics recycling. The team’s public service announcement and instructional video each earned a silver award from the Minnesota Association of Government Communicators’ Northern Lights Awards, which recognize outstanding work in government, educational and nonprofit communications.

The two videos encourage residents to sign up for the City’s new organics recycling program and demonstrate step-by-step organics recycling instructions. This campaign marked the first time Communications has used animation in its productions. The Communications Department strives to break the stereotype of formal and even stodgy government communications, so staff sets out to create videos that not only get the message out to the public but do so in a creative, engaging way.  The use of animation and graphics gave the video a fun, clean, inviting look that ties into other organics recycling promotional tools. Minneapolis residents have been able to watch the videos on cable TV, through social media, on the City website and through other communications platforms. These videos are part of a multiyear communications strategy to promote organics recycling in the city.
