Congrats, STAR Award winner Gene Kelley

Gene Kelley 2

Gene Kelley, contract compliance officer
Contract Compliance, Department of Civil Rights

Contract Compliance Director Kolu Paye nominated Kelley for being a constant source of positivity in the office.

“The work that we do can often become exhausting and may impact morale, but Kelley is always reminding us of the significance, connections and impact that our work has. He has a positive relationship with all the people he interacts with inside and outside of the office. I have received many emails of praise from developers/contractors and individuals simply curious about an aspect about our office after speaking with Gene. He inspires the rest of the team to keep a positive attitude and role models positive relationships.

“Kelley is a very adaptable person. Whenever I assign him to a project with a fairly new employee as a partner, I know I can count on him to mentor and encourage the inexperienced staff.

“He helps ensure that every member of the team is included and their voice is valued. In any situation where there is a group of people making one decision, it is easy for someone's voice to be lost. However, Kelley makes sure that is not the case with our team, which often leads to great ideas that might have otherwise been unheard.

“Kelley takes the initiative to make positive change. He organized, scheduled and executed an Apprenticeship Tour with the Fair Contracting Foundation for the benefit of not only networking between our two similarly interested agencies, but also increasing our division’s understanding and perspective on apprentices themselves.

“I can always count on Kelley to be supportive of new ideas and change, as well as talk out the potential implications (positive or negative). He always keeps an open mind in discussing new things. I have trusted him with helping write and rewrite significant ordinances that impact the function of our division while keeping the interests of our stakeholders in mind.

“Kelley is the type of person that you can count on – he is very dependable. Additionally, he is seen as a great resource on our team where we all know we can go to him for support on any occasion.”
