City’s Health Department gets accreditation

The City’s Health Department has just received national accreditation through the Public Health Accreditation Board. It’s one of four health departments in Minnesota that are joining the 135 accredited health departments nationwide. To receive accreditation, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer-reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds a set of quality standards and measures.

The Public Health Accreditation Board was created in 2007 to serve as the national public health accrediting body. It is jointly funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. It set standards against which the nation’s nearly 3,000 governmental public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and performance.

Until now, the Minnesota Department of Health, Hennepin County Public Health and the Washington County Health Department were the only health departments in the state to receive this accreditation. Along with the Minneapolis Health Department, Dakota County Public Health, Saint Paul-Ramsey County Public Health and Bloomington Public Health/Public Health Alliance of Bloomington are now getting accredited.

The Minneapolis Health Department provides a diverse range of services as it carries out its mission to improve the quality of life for all people in the city by protecting the environment, preventing disease and injury, promoting healthy behaviors, and creating a city that is a healthy place to live, work and play. In 2013, the department was one of just six communities in the country to receive the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Culture of Health Prize.
